About Us

Providing quality services for more than 60 years

Best Repair Company, Inc. began in 1958 when Cephus A. Staton took the knowledge he gained as chief engineer on merchant marine vessels and applied it to creating a motor/generator rewind and repair facility in a 1,200-square-foot shop located in Norfolk. His mission was simple: to provide the very best service possible while meeting or exceeding his clients’ deadlines.

The business started small and has grown proportionately over the decades into a full electrical apparatus repair facility. Cephus moved from his tiny shop to a larger, 10,000-square-foot space before he purchased the old Norfolk Pepsi Cola Bottling Company building in 1970. The third and final move expanded their operations to a 40,000 square-foot facility that was completely upgraded to fit the needs of the company’s customers. Cephus’ son, Thomas B. Staton, took full control of the business in 1977 after his father’s passing. He continued to run BRC until 2000 when he decided to semi-retire. Ownership passed to his son, John A. Staton, who is currently the third-generation Staton to run the company.

Like his predecessors, John learned much of the business on the job while watching the electricians and machinists work on client projects. He grew up in the business cleaning floors and disassembling electric motors, but eventually learned all of the trades of the business, including motor rewinding, machine shop machining operations, welding/fabrication, electrical field installations, and electrical troubleshooting of field installation systems.

Through the years, as electrical control systems increased in their level of sophistication and moved from analog to digital technology, John enrolled in college to get his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University in 1989 before taking over the business from his dad. He was the first member of his family to attend and graduate college.

Because of his hands-on-approach to the business, John knows every facet of every job the company works on today to ensure each customer is treated with respect and provided with quality work. In fact, most of their job leads have come from word-of-mouth advertising, based on how highly their customers regard the value provided by Best Repair Company, Inc.
